Sorry for the lack of updates over the Christmas period, but family comes first and we haven't seen much footall locally anyhow.
So last weekend saw a return to action for most local sides including the one I currently play for, The Boro Bar Ultras who played yesterday morning at The Riverside Pavillion in Peterborough - www.peterborough.gov.uk/leisure_and_culture/other_leisure_activities/the_riverside_pavilion.aspx
Unfortunately we lost 2-1 in a closely fought and well played game, a game where I had to go off injured with suspected ligament damage to my right knee - OUCH! Not good when you're hitting the big 40 this year and still competing with younger guys in 90 mins of football, I'll be out for a couple of weeks and no more I hope as it's horrible missing games.
I'll be on the lookout this week for updates in local football and will post more on here this week and after the weekends games.

Peterborough Town
Sunday morning outfit Peterorough Town from Division 1 of the PSMFL are fast becoming favourites for just about anything they enter, they boast an impressive 18 month unbeaten run in competitive games on Sunday mornings locally and just this weekend they knocked out Premier League leaders Netherton from the PFA Sunday morning cup.
Now thats an impressive record by any standards and they deserve all the praise they're currently getting.
You can check their progress, along with other PSMFL teams here - www.footballleagueadmin.com/psmfl/
And please dont forget to leave your comments on the stories you read here, even if just to say hello.
Without user feedback and content it's hard to gauge likes/dislikes etc.
Thanks.

Saturday football.
The PDFL and PFA look after things for local Saturday football which I've always kept an eye on as friends are involved with running teams and playing for them.
At present the Premier Leagues looks like going to the wire between several teams and it's a league that is well worth keeping an eye on, local guys such as Gino Agius, Tommy Cooper, Al Lehnian, Alex Brown and Johhny Bryne etc are all at the helm of some of the top sides, thats not to mention some of the players including the likes of Dean Clarke (hot 7 goals for Oundle this weekend, yes thats SEVEN in 1 game), Ian Edge, Lee Harbour and Chris Garwell etc, these are all well known faces around the local football scene and are creating quite a buzz this season with a very competitive league.
Our local paper the Peterborough Evening Telegraph does well to keep us informed, but for a more in depth look at things you could take a look here at PST (Peterborough Sports Talk) - www.pst-uk.co.uk/forum there are plenty of local players, managers and spectators all willing to offer their opinions on the games they may be involved in, it's a no holds barred forum so please visit with an open mind and with tongue firmly in cheek!
Look out for the PSL chairman Tommy Cooper as he's posted on PST a bet (for charity) on who will win the PDFL Premier league with teams getting points headstart based on a grading system he judged at the start of the season, plenty of local lads have taken the bet with updates happening on a frequent basis, who's winning and more importantly who's last and deserving a ribbing...

Non League
With several good non league clubs locally we are spoilt for choice, the current pick of the crop are the PNS team which play their home games at Chestnut Avenue in Dogsthorpe, they have reached round 4 (last 32 I believe) of this years FA Vase and could be in line for a wembley final if they win their remaining games in this competition.
I would urge everyone to take a look at Peterborough Northern Star this season and pop along to show support to a local well run footballing side, they have youth teams and even a ladies team.
If anyone is interested then please take a look at their website here - http://www.pnsfc.com/
And a recent game of theirs is shown here on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FCOV_l0xrs&noredirect=1

PSMFL
Peterborough Sunday Morning Football League (PSMFL) seems to be enjoying somewhat of a renaissance following the addition of several new teams for the 2010/11 season.
In recent years the number of teams had been decreasing following several local teams folding, thankfully the current PSMFL can boast competitive leagues and cups, good refereeing standards and great communication between league officials, refs and teams/players alike.
From a personal viewpoint it's great to see as I have been involved with local Sunday morning football for many years, back in 2003 I took over running the old EMAP side which was languishing in the bottom division at the time (Div 5), in my 6 year reign as player/manager I successfully guided them to 5 promotions into the Premier league and 3 cup finals, we narrowly lost the prestigious Northants County Cup on penalties at a local UCL stadium.
Nowadays I've retired from managing a team as my family are priority for my time, but I do still play for a side that includes 8 or 9 lads from my old EMAP FC side, we are currently 2nd in division 2 and enjoying the social aspect of playing football with friends.
The team is called the Boro Bar Ultras, here's our logo:
We play our home games at The Riverside, Sugar Way off Oundle Road and are then found at The Boro Bar pub post match for a pint whilst discussing the game, Sundays dont get much better than that!
Check our side out here - http://www.clubwebsite.co.uk/theborobarultras/224214/Home
The PSMFL is always in need of new teams, players, refs and/or committee members, anyone interested in knowing more should feel free to contact them or me at fcbauer@hotmail.co.uk and I'll happily pass your details on.
Look out for more on grass roots football in our local area soon!
